Nimatuj Family

  • Names: Carmen (mother), Rudy (father) William (child), Maria & Alberto (grandparents)
  • Message to a student: We'd love to share time with you. With much love and variety of flavors in our foods, we'd love to make your trip a very enjoyable one.
  • Why do you like to host a foreign student?
I like hosting students because I can learn their culture, custom, what they eat, etc. I love serving people and it's a form of art to make our visitors fall in love with our culture. And since our family is pretty small, I love having more kids!
  • What do you do in your free time?
In my free time, I like sewing things and making things with my hands. I like making piñatas. I talk with my son William about what's going on in life in general too.
  • What do you do to make your foreign students feel at home?
From the first place, I talk with my student and give him/her warm welcome. And ask him about how was his trip to get here. I ask her about what kind of food she can eat or cannot eat. When she goes out, I like going out with her so she won't get lost or feel insecure about walking around in the new neighborhood. I always talk with him during the meal time so we can share our lives and so that he won't feel lonely being far away from his home.
  • What's your family like?
We always talk about anything. We are easy-going and when one of us is in trouble, we try to help each other. We always try to be there for each other and stick together.
  • What's your favorite food, music, movie, television show, color and travel location?
My favorite foods are chile relleno (stuffed pepper), paches de pollo, shrimps. My husband likes estofado. My parents love pepian. My son likes caldillo. I like listening to waltz and boleros. I listen to salsa with my husband too. Movies and television, I like comedies. But I don't spend much time in front of TV. I just watch a little bit of news. I fall sleep when I sit down to watch TV. My favorite colors are red and brown. I like going to anywhere warm like beaches in the southern coast.
  • Who is/was the most influential person in your life?
First comes God, then comes my mother. We spend a lot of time together for most of our days and we talk about everything.
  • What is the Guatemala's biggest social issue? What do you propose to solve the Guatemala's problems?
Violence and crime coming from many broken homes. Lots of kids are on the streets robbing people, smelling glues, etc. When there are lots of broken homes, kids are the ones who suffer first and then all of us. Also we need to send more kids to school instead of pulling them out to work. We need more schools.
